Art Talk Monday: Arts Academy for Christmas

As we bustle about, preparing for the oh-so-near holidays, the NCLAC office has a few announcements that may help you with some Imageof your last minute to-do’s.

Are you buying someone a camera for Christmas? Or, did you buy someone a camera last year and they STILL haven’t learned to use it? NCLAC Arts Academy can help: call our office for a gift certificate to our Basic Photography Workshop! In a weekend intensive workshop, Jan. 25-26 from 1-5pm, Breaux Bridge photographer Sonny Monteleone will be at the Dixie Center for the Arts for a workshop that will help dispel the fears of the camera. Monteleone will cover basics such as holding technique, buttons, exposure, settings and composition. The only supplies needed are a camera, preferably with manual settings, and the camera manual. Cost for the weekend workshop is $160 for NCLAC members, $170 for non-members. A pre-registration fee of $25 is required to hold your space, as class size is limited for personal instruction. This fee will go toward your total cost.

Do you love someone who paints? Does that artist spend too much money on store-bought surfaces for painting? NCLAC Arts Academy can help: call our office for a gift certificate for On The Surface: A Handmade Painting/Art Surface Workshop. Taught by artist Peter Hay, this class will cover how to create an affordable painting surface by the exploration of cost cutting measures, hand tools, construction craft, and other surface options. Participants will leave with an 8″x10″ stretched canvas and panel prepared with a homemade gesso. The class will be held at the Dixie Center for the Arts on Saturday, January 25, from 10am-noon. Cost for the class is $25 for NCLCAC members, $30 for non-members.

Would you like a stocking stuffer that equals a night out with dining and dancing? The Krewe of Allegro’s 15th Annual Mardi Gras Ball is just the thing. When winter is cold and gray, the region’s arts nonprofits are joining together for a grand evening at the Ruston Civic Center, February 22.  Tickets this year are as follows: Lord and Lady, for guests ages 40 and under, are $40 each; Baron and Baroness, for guests ages 41 and over, are $60 each. Your ticket includes two complimentary drinks, heavy hors d’oeuvres, and live music for dancing the night away. Another highlight of the evening is the NCLAC Silent Auction, exclusively for guests of the Ball. Weekend trips, home décor, unique artwork, and other fun adventures will be available at the auction. Call the Dixie Box Office at (318)255-1450 to pre-purchase your ticket.

Now for kids ages 7-12…NCLAC will hold an Arts Academy class on Monday, January 20, from 9am-3pm. This is our annual Martin Luther King, Jr. art-day, as children will be out of school but most parents won’t be off work. Held at the Dixie Center for the Arts, supplies and a snack will be provided with your class fee of $25 for NCLAC members, $30 for non-members. Be sure to send a sack lunch for your child.

Each of our Arts Academy classes requires pre-registration by either calling our office at (318)255-1450, or emailing us at nclac5@gmail.com

Now for one last order of business: as the season winds down and we reflect upon the closing year, please be sure to remember the North Central Louisiana Arts Council in your year-end charitable giving. We receive no city or parish financial support, but rely on memberships and donations to continue our arts programming for the region. Annual memberships with NCLAC, which begin as low as $15 for students, make such a difference to us in planning the coming year. Membership benefits can be found on our website, nclarts.org. Both memberships and general donations are tax-deductible contributions.
