Art Talk Monday: Exhibition Opportunities

This week’s Art Talk Monday is written by Jessica Slaughter, NCLAC Executive Director

This week I’d like to share some art exhibition opportunities with our regional artists, as well as a new family-friendly event scheduled for our region this fall.

First up, the Meadows Museum of Art in Shreveport is holding a call for entries for its third Triennial Competition. This regional art exhibition is available for artists in north Louisiana, and is in keeping with the museum’s mission to highlight the visual contributions of artists in the north Louisiana region to the cultural legacy of the state. This year’s Triennial will be jurored by Jolene Mechanic, Director of the Flood Museum in Asheville, North Carolina. The exhibition will be on display from September 7 through December 15. Submissions are due July 27, and there is a $15 entry fee. You may find out more details by calling 318-869-5169.

Next, DOWNSTAIRS gallery + studio is proud to announce a call for art for its Second Annual Juried Exhibition “ALL SOULS DAY” with an opening reception on October 3, 2013 from 5 to 9 pm. Gallery owner Julie Pearson states “Works must be original art or sculpture that explores rituals that venerate the departed including, but not limited to Roman Catholic holidays of All Saints and All Souls Days and the Mexican Day of the Dead, which blends ancient harvest rituals with All Souls Day. The November 2 celebration honors the dead and acknowledges the link between communities of the living and the dead, with prayers for safe journeys in the afterlife, strengthening spiritual ties of family and community.“

Artists should submit images of two and three-dimensional works, including ofrendas or altars, that examine rituals honoring the deceased, are prayers for intercession or safe journey, and that pay tribute to the departed. Works will be judged on artistic quality and appropriateness to themes.

Forms are available at http://downstairsgalleryla.com, with images due no later than September 8, 2013.  An Entry Fee of $5 (students) and $10 (professional) will be required per piece for accepted submissions.

Finally, there is a new event coming to Ruston on September 14, the PLAY Festival (Peace, Love, Art and Yoga.) This free festival is being organized by north Louisiana yoga teachers, and will emphasize yoga, art, wellness and healthy living. There will be yoga demonstrations, activities for children, live music, art exhibitions, dancing and more. Organizers are currently gathering artists, craftors and vendors, so if you’re interested in more information about this opportunity, contact Jan Thibault at jantebo@icloud.com
